A statement from the #open team

Black Lives Matter

The #open team stands firm with the Black community against racial violence. We decided to delay our official statement so as to not distract from crucial information, activism, news, & from those directly impacted by recent events. We want to create a better community, and so we’re taking this time to turn our attention to the ways that we all must work together to create a racially & socially just world.

#BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation, Inc. is a global organization in the US, UK, and Canada, whose mission is to eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities by the state and vigilantes. By combating and countering acts of violence, creating space for Black imagination and innovation, and centering Black joy, we are winning immediate improvements in our lives.

We have — and encourage all community members that are able to do so — donated to Bail Funds, Community Organizers, and Local Assistance funds to support the protestors and communities that have been most deeply affected over the past weeks. We will be making additional donations, both individually and collectively, in the days to come, where the needs are most apparent, following the requests of Black organizers.

As a primarily white team, over the past two years we have had — and continue to have — hard conversations with each other, asking each other to question our own privileges, delve deeper into the news that we’re consuming in search of truth, and work to live our company values of diversity & safety for all of our members.

We’ve spent time thinking about what our community needs from us. And now, more than ever, we’ve decided to direct our privilege to center on the needs and experiences of our Black and POC colleagues and community members.

We encourage each of you to take a deep breath and learn more about what is happening, the ways that systemic racism affects our world, and look for ways that you can bring about change. We hope that you feel the love and the sense of community that will sustain us all and move us towards a more just society.
