Worried About Access To Abortion Care? Here’s 4 Outstanding Orgs You Can Donate To
Abortion rights have been in focus lately, and for good reason.
This week’s leak of the Supreme Court’s drafted opinion on overturning Roe v. Wade has rightfully caused a new wave of anger, distrust, and disgust at our current political system. As we’ve already seen the types of trigger laws states like Texas, Arizona, and Georgia have put in place to effectively ban abortion, the complete removal of federal protections for abortion rights is downright scary to picture for childbearing people in our country. According to the Center for Reproductive Rights, abortion rights would be protected in less than half of the U.S. states and none of the U.S. territories.
As a sex-positive company, the team at #open firmly believes that abortion is basic healthcare and that all pregnant humans should have the right to access safe, effective abortion care, no matter the circumstance. For those who share in our collective rage, sadness, and desire to do something to help, we encourage you to find local protests, continue to use your right to vote, and, if you’re able, donate to the organizations that will fight to support and provide funding for abortion care. Woodhull Freedom Foundation: Woodhull’s work includes fighting censorship, eliminating discrimination based on gender or sexual identity, or family form, and protecting the right to engage in consensual sexual activity and expression. NARAL Prochoice America: The 2.5 million members of NARAL Pro-Choice America fight for reproductive freedom for every body. They work to organize and mobilize to protect that freedom by fighting for access to abortion care, birth control, paid parental leave, and protection from pregnancy discrimination. The Yellowhammer Fund*: The Yellowhammer Fund is a 501(c)3 abortion fund and reproductive justice organization serving Alabama, Mississippi, and the Deep South. Their mission envisions a society where reproductive decisions are made free from coercion, shame, or state interference. While the reversal of Roe would be devastating to all, it would especially impact low-income pregnant people and pregnant folks of color. It would also expand this country’s ability to criminalize miscarriage care, which is medically quite similar to abortion care. Up to 1 in 4 pregnancies end in miscarriage, and there are many stories of hospitals denying miscarriage care for religious reasons. This transforms an already dangerous and potentially traumatizing type of pregnancy loss into something far more unbearable.
In Michigan, for example, a woman who was miscarrying was forced to return home for three days while her body attempted to pass the remaining tissue in her uterus. The D&C procedure she needed to remove the tissue, and to avoid the risk of sepsis and other serious complications, was not allowed due to her hospital’s strict anti-abortion policies. These are important things to consider as we examine what a post-Roe world might look like.
